Biography
John Beckwith, composer, pianist, author and teacher, was born in Victoria, BC, 9 March 1927. His over 150
compositions include 4 operas, orchestral, chamber, solo and choral works, and he has published critical and
scholarly articles in Canadian music studies. He began lecturing part-time at the University of Toronto
in 1952, taught full-time 1955-90, and was dean of the Faculty of Music 1970-77.
