We're excited and happy to share one of the gems from our special collections with the Montreal Museum of Fine Art for its exhibition, “ Splendore a Venezia: Art and Music from the Renaissance to Baroque in the Serenissima”, running from October 12, 2013 to January 19, 2014. This exhibitions sounds excellent! According to their website:

“This multidisciplinary and innovative exhibition is the first to explore the interaction between the visual arts and the Venetian musical scene with its operas and splendid balls. Inspiring the most eminent artists, including Titian, Bassano, Strozzi, Tintoretto, the Tiepolos, Guardi, Longhi, and Canaletto, the marriage of music and the fine arts gave birth to a number of painting masterpieces.”

The book we're lending is Gioseffo Zarlino's Istitutioni harmoniche, published in Venice by Francesco de i Franceschi Senese,1573. As Claude Palisca describes, this text constitutes “one of the most important works of music theory” ("Zarlino," Grove Music Online).
