Discourses in Music: Volume 1 Number 1 (Spring 2000)

Welcome

Discourses in Music is a new journal initiated by graduate students at the University of Toronto dedicated to developing and maintaining a dialogue about music among graduate students across Canada. I want to welcome you to this new journal and invite you to send us information about yourself or your colleagues that would be of interest to your peers. We are constantly seeking new articles and encourage you to send us articles on any musical subject from Pythagoras to yesterday's concert and everything in between.

Discourses in Music is a tri-annual journal providing information and news that is of interest to graduate and recently-graduated musical scholars. Each issue will feature an article written by a graduate student; the following issue will include a discussion of the article from a designated critic and opinions from subscribers. This is what makes us unique-we encourage reaction, opinion, ongoing discussion and dialogue. We are planning an on-line discussion group that will elicit opinion from musicians to be incorporated into the journal. In many and various ways, Discourses in Music hopes to bring what we believe to be a disparate music community closer together. If this sounds like a tall order, it is! And we hope to fulfil it. As with all things, this will take time, but more importantly it will take the involvement of the larger musical community. We encourage you to get involved and help us make this journal a truly national discussion piece.

The journal is partly funded by the Music Graduate Student's Association, at the University of Toronto, and it is entirely student-run, student-written, and student-produced.

Please join us.
