Discourses in Music: Volume 6 Number 1 (Summer 2006)

Editorial

Well, it’s been a long time coming but I hope you will agree that this edition of Discourses in Music was worth the wait! As is our wont at Discourses, this edition takes an eclectic tour of music history and current opinion. We are lacking only your response, dear readers.

Our featured article, from the pen of Robert Torre, provides a new interpretation of an 18th century operatic rivalry between Vinci and Hasse. We jump both backwards and forwards in time with Jamie Younkin’s review of Sanctuary’s contemporary interpretation of plainsong and stay firmly in the present with David Ogborn’s incisive criticism of how we define compositional success. Finally, we hear again from Leslie Kinton, who continues the debate opened by his Discourses article of 2003, responding to Sandy Thorburn’s response.

As always, we invite all readers to contribute responses, articles, or reviews on musical subjects. Please don't hesitate to contact Discourses if you would like to get involved: editor@library.music.utoronto.ca/discourses-in-music/index.html. Enjoy...
